Pioneer Day Week 2

Wednesday we had Week 2 of our Pioneer Days. This week I counted 18 children present! Can you believe it?

First, we reviewed last week and then we talked about clothing during Pioneer time- like what boys and girls would wear to school. Then we talked a bit about slates and copy books and the importance of good handwriting. We then made our own Copy Books. To make them we took card stock and covered it in fabric. I had several styles of fabric to choose from. They glued it on with white glue. Then they had plain white paper and they were to make lines on the paper with a pencil. This is hard work and I thought it was good for all of them to try. We take our lined paper for granted, I think!

Then they cut holes (no hole punches back them) - into the cover and papers and used yarn to bind the book. They then could try out the calligraphy pens by signing each others books. Some even tried using a quill and real ink! Surprisingly they were very good at it!

After we went outside and learned a few recess games they would have played. We played; Drop the Hankie, Button Button and I talked to them about Fox and Geese. Another favorite game of the time was Marbles so we made our own marbles out of clay and put them in their own little cloth baggies to take home. I wish we had planned an extra week so we could have painted them once they have dried. Maybe they can do that at home.

After all of the marble making they headed in to wash with authentic lye soap!!! and have a snack of home-popped popcorn, apple cider and Hard Tack! (Thanks Moms!)

I hope everyone had a good time and is all ready for our final field trip to the Early American Museum next week! We are going to all try to dress and bring a pioneer lunch. I always get SO nervous when it comes to these types of things. But I recently decided that I would just start to invite others to join us doing the things I love doing with my kids. More the merrier - right?

You all know I could go on and on with how much Classical Conversations has changed our homeschooling but it is days like this that I really feel it! At one point I looked into my backyard and saw 18 kids of all ages (3-14) playing together so happily. It just made me feel like I was doing something right!
