Pioneer Day

We have been studying American History this year in our Classical Conversations group and it has just all tied in so nicely with all of the extras we have been doing - like our planetarium visit, art museum field trip, Kinderconcert at Krannert, and various other things.

So, to close our year I thought it would be fun to end with a mini-unit on Pioneer or Early American life. We would spend two afternoons learning more about that time period and then go to the Early American museum on the third week and visit the one room school house and the museum.

Today was Day 1 - We made butter, made Johnny Cakes, learned about food that was eaten and how it was stored for that time period. Then we made a Tin Punch ornament and talked about Tinkers. It was a busy few hours but I think everyone had a good time and hopefully learned a bit. The challenge of these events is trying to make it interesting enough for the older children but yet simple enough for the youngest. I was telling Darren about it tonight and figured out that we had 14 children present today in my tiny house! Thank goodness it was beautiful outside and we took advantage of that!

I thank God for such a wonderful group of people that have made our homeschooling experience so enjoyable and successful this year! It was our best year yet!
